Macroetching is done by etching a suitably prepared specimen by an appropriate reagent. This test is used extensively for quality control in steel industry, and to determine the ‘tone’ of a heat in billets with respect to inclusions, segregation and structure. Steels react differently to etching reagents because of variations in chemical composition, method of manufacture, heat-treatment and many other variables.
